The Generosity Cupboard is one of the avenues in the church where we have an opportunity to “help the needy among us” and share what we have. As the church has grown, so has the number among us who are needy for their basic needs to be met. The prevailing value we have as a church family is that when a need arises within a community, those who are in community with these particular people help them with groceries, food vouchers, etc. While holding passionately to this biblical value, the number of needy in some communities far outweigh those who have plenty, and this is where the Generosity Cupboard steps in.
Once a month, every community collects basic food and toiletry items, which are then dropped off at the church office and put into packages. Then, as and when the need arises, these are distributed to people IN the church who are in need.
The other aspect of the Generosity Cupboard is clothing/household items. These are also delivered to the church office and distributed as needed. This includes electrical appliances, beds, linen, furniture and clothing.
This avenue of ministry in Oxygen Life really helps to minister to the holistic needs of the body – the love of God working in our hearts, overflowing in a practical way to those who are part of the family!
My parents have struggled financially for years (almost 10 years now). Through these tough situations is how I actually came to rely on God and give my life over to Him (2004-ish). Through the years, my parents have asked me for money and sometimes I’ve loaned them money and sometimes I haven’t. Early on through wisdom from elders, I learnt that I should never “loan” money, I should rather “give” money with no expectation of receiving it back so that there is freedom in giving and no guilt put onto a relationship or a person. This was difficult for me as I thought in order to honour and respect my parents (a commandment) I needed to help them when they needed help. I had to make a stand for Jesus in my life and say that I couldn’t help them financially anymore. I had to separate myself from my earthly parents and follow what my Heavenly Father says is right and true. 2 Corinthians 12:14 “… After all, children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children”.
